Overview

On our 15-night Northern Canadian Discovery voyage, travel via the Northwest Passage on a portion of the fabled, ice-covered waterway that so confounded famous explorers. We are in awe of the ice-filled gaps and fjords stuffed with enormous icebergs as we cruise from Greenland into the heart of the world's icebergs.

Caribou and polar bears may be found in abundance on the northern Canadian coast near Nunavut, while in Newfoundland, we can learn about the Inuit culture and see old whaling sites. Every visitor should do this epic journey once in a lifetime since it combines culture and adventure.

Highlights

  • Follow the path of 16th-century whalers and 19th-century explorers
  • Marvel at the glistening bergs, growlers and glaciers in the iceberg capital of the world
  • Immerse yourself in Inuit culture and traditions as you wander their ancestral homelands
  • Look up at towering cliffs crammed with seabirds while below narwhal swim gracefully
  • Learn about the history of Viking exploration, and Dorset and Thule people from our experts on board

Departure Date: 21/09/23 - 06/10/23

Itinerary

Day

1

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland
Kangerlussuaq

Kangerlussuaq, located at the head of one of western Greenland's longest fjords, used as an airbase during World War II. To hear and witness the 60-meter-tall Russell Glacier face on the edge of the Greenland ice cap crack and break off into the meltwater, visit the area. Other well-liked pursuits include fjord kayaking and wildlife excursions to glacier regions that are home to muskoxen, reindeer, arctic foxes, and gyrfalcons.

Day

2

At Sea

The various amenities offered allow you to spend the entire day at sea. Take in the breathtaking views as you make your way to the sauna, work out in the cutting-edge gym, or unwind in the jacuzzi. If you'd want to learn more about the area you're in, you may attend an educational session or speak with one of our trained on-board specialists.

Day

3

Qeqertarsuaq
Qeqertarsuaq

Qeqertarsuaq is the largest town on Disko Island, the largest island in Greenland, on the west coast, and part of Disko Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lyngmark Glacier rises above the town and the area’s lush hills, basalt columns, and black sand beaches reflect its volcanic origin.

The area is very fertile and home to diverse species not found elsewhere in Greenland. Keep an eye out for its hot springs as we move through floating icebergs and whales.

Day

4

Ilulissat
Ilulissat

Sailing through the iceberg capital of the world to Disko Bay, the Ilulissat Icefjord is one of the cruise highlights. Given UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the Ilulissat Icefjord is a popular tourist destination, and thanks to the productive Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, thousands of gargantuan icebergs calve from the Greenland ice cap into the sea. The city of Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is home to as many sled-dogs as people.

Day

5

Sisimiut
Sisimiut

Sisimiut, the northernmost city in Greenland and located just north of the Arctic Circle, is renowned as a center for adventure sports and has ice-free winters. Dog sleds are still a typical way of transportation in this region, which has been inhabited for more than 4,500 years by the Inuit, Dorset, and subsequently Thule people.

We can also visit abandoned towns, but it still has a hip, contemporary side. Keep an eye out for walrus and humpback whales between Sisimiut and the northern Thule region.

Day

6

Nuuk (Godthab)
Nuuk

The capital of Greenland, Nuuk, which is also home to more than a third of the population, might easily make you believe that you are travelling through a remote and wild area.

You will witness the bustling old Colonial Harbour with Nuuk Cathedral's prominent, colourful wooden buildings, avant-garde architecture, and a stunning array of fjords with clear icy seas and an untouched mountain backdrop.

It is also known by its Danish name, Godthb (Good Hope). Watch out for whales as well as reindeer, arctic foxes, and arctic hares on land.

Day

7

At Sea

Days at sea are rarely boring. Spend some time relaxing and observing life as it happens. The viewing decks on the ship offer breathtaking views of the passing seas. During a day at sea, you have the option of visiting our library, which is packed with reference materials, or mingling with other travelers and exchanging stories about this amazing journey. Attend one of our on-board lectures to hear from an expert, or perhaps one of our experienced photographers will help you improve your photography with their insightful suggestions.

Day

8

Iqaluit
Iqaluit

The native Inuit are an integral part of Iqaluit, a remote community at the head of Frobisher Bay. Once considered the possible entrance of a Northwest Passage, the bay provides insight into Inuit history and culture including dog-sledding on handmade qamutik sleds led by qimmiiq - North America's oldest and rarest purebred canine. Inuit artworks are showcased at Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum while Inuit history is evident at Crystal II, an ancient Thule Inuit settlement outside of Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park.

Day

9

Lady Franklin Island
Lady Franklin Island

Lady Franklin Island, an isolated island off Hall Peninsula on Baffin Island, is well renowned for its enormous vertical cliffs of Archean rocks, which are thought to be the country's oldest stones. In this ice-covered section of the Davis Strait, gulls, ptarmigan, and black guillemots all have nesting territories. A well-known polar bear resting location is Monumental Island, where lumbering walrus load out to the south. The beluga whales in the Cumberland Sound, nearby, belong to a different species.

Day

10

Akpatok Island
Akpatok Island

Akpatok Island, whose name in Inuktitut means thick-billed murre, is a significant birding destination because it has the greatest number of breeding thick-billed murres in Canada.

On the ledges of the towering limestone cliffs, more than 500,000 pairs of birds live together, and glaucous gulls keep a sharp eye out for vulnerable eggs and chicks. The scene is composed of polar bears, walruses, and seals. Even as recently as 1900, this region was home to the heinous practice of cannibalism.

Day

11

Torngat Mountains National Park
Torngat Mountains National Park

Torngat Mountains National Park, which is entirely staffed by Inuit, gets its name from the Inuktitut term tonga, which means "place of spirits." We have a unique opportunity to walk in the Inuit's footsteps as they relate their legends about spirits and cultural practises on their native territory, where they have been fishing and hunting polar bears and caribou for millennia.

Only by boat can one enter this enchanted land, which is made up of spectacularly beautiful mountains and deep fjords that nudge up to iceberg-filled oceans.

Day

16

Halifax, Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia

The vibrant capital of Nova Scotia is full of the charm and history of the sea. The nautical museums, forts, and bunkers that are scattered throughout the city provide insight into its naval past. With eye-catching public art and unique stores on every corner, this area also has an interesting counterculture component.
