Overview

Durga Puja in Kolkata

Durga Puja is a grand Hindu festival celebrated during Navratri every year in Kolkata, India. As of 2022, around 3,000 Barowari Pujas were held in Kolkata. Apart from this, more than 200 pujas worth more than Rs 1 crore were organized in Kolkata.

This festival is celebrated for 10 days in Kolkata. Pandals with grand idols of Goddess Durga remain open to visitors. Durga Puja usually starts in October and continues for 2 weeks ending on the Dussehra or Vijayadashmi day with Idol immersion grand celebration and a procession.

Origin of Durga Puja
The warrior goddess Durga was brought into existence by the collective effort of all the gods in heaven according to Hindu mythology. The main reason for this was when one of the demons, the evil creatures who live in the underworld, was given a boon by one of the gods, which said that no one could kill this man. So after this, the demon tried to capture the abode of the gods. This worried all the gods, who failed to defeat the driving demon.

To solve this worrisome issue all the Gods came together, and all of them used their powers together to create an invincible woman named Durga or Impenetrable who we know as Goddess Durga. When Mahishasura first laid eyes on the goddess, he was captivated by her beauty and desired to marry her. But the goddess was ready to marry only the one who could defeat her in battle.

After this, there was a war between Mahishasura and Goddess Durga for nine days and on the tenth day of the war, Mahishasura was killed. On this occasion, Hindu devotees celebrate the ten-day festival, Durga Puja, although the tenth day is known as Vijayadashami. Which is a symbol of good over evil.

Chokhu Daan
Chokhu Daan is the day when Goddess Durga's eyes are painted for Durga Puja. There are very unique rituals of Durga Puja in Kolkata. A week before the start of Navratri, the entire idol of Goddess Durga is painted except the eyes. On the occasion of Mahalaya, the Goddess is invited to earth with rituals.

For this reason, this day is called Chokku Daan, it is an auspicious ritual, and eyes are made on the idols on this day. It is believed that when eyes are made in the idol of Goddess Durga, at that time Goddess Durga incarnates on earth. Most of the sculptures in Kolkata are made in Kumartuli or Kumhar area in North Kolkata, which is famous for making sculptures.
